“What you do says what is most important to you. Action Expresses Priorities”…Mahatma Gandhi

Challenging times make us introspect where we are? What is our purpose? And inwardly question in reflective tones… ‘what if the unimaginable happens?’

We not only question our ability to cope with changes but also whether we have done adequately to protect our health, family and community?

At the work front, we deliberate on :

How to Amplify our Work Identity and Longevity?

Crises motivate us to find deep value in our lives and we are urged to strengthen our professional and personal roots.

While defining life purpose is a momentous exercise for later discussion, let’s begin by evaluating :

How do we strengthen our Work Identity?

Redefine Value@Work?

Build Credibility for Advancement?

Here’s a list for you to chalk out…

1. Consolidate and collect all work experiences:

The first thing to jumpstart momentum is to write, document and create an evolving document of all our job responsibilities, accomplishments, professional engagements, new skills, project deliverables, etc.

2. Journal Routinely

Bring self-focus to your Value@work by routinely journaling and writing your contribution.

Look at areas where your work has brought about a significant increase in quality of outcome whether it is a factor of time, cost, efficiency, stakeholder management, critical competencies, partnerships, or many more.

By regularly updating the resume and linked in profile, you not only keep information current but also show that you deeply associate with your work and take pride in what you do…

3. Showcase your Potential

Another way to enhance Value@work is to learn from the paths charted by hi-potentials.

The ability to adapt and grow into increasingly complex roles is termed ‘potential.’ This is one of the most sought after leadership traits.

As per a Harvard research, high potentials seems to have a ‘catalytic learning capability’, ‘the capacity to scan new ideas, the cognitive capability to absorb them and common sense to translate the learning to productive action for organization.’

Extend and map this value add of high-potentials to your career experiences and showcase how you have addressed new learnings, skills and challenges.

4.Convert Challenge to Opportunity

Assess your existing repertoire of skills and resources and how they can be used creatively in different teams and projects. For example, your side projects in digital marketing could help you get involved in digital transformation initiatives, your blogs could prove useful in content marketing & digital drives, your knack in design could pivot another opportunity in customer interface scenarios.

5.Ask Yourself and quantify your most relevant experience

List out what is the impact and leadership scale of your role on the overall performance?

The more you quantify the results, the better your ability to discuss, share and bring it to the notice of management.

6.Give Yourself Innovation Time:

Spend some time outside of professional responsibilities to increase your industry presence and understanding, whether through blogs, similar interest groups and platforms, conferences and presenter gigs. All the additional reading, research, writing, experimenting with new technologies and concepts gives your brain the fuel to think out of the box and ignite the innovativeness.

7.Safeguard the Trust

A valuable and visible upwards job-scaling has a lot to do with the trust based on your past achievement, judgment, decision making, team skills and results-orientation.

Safeguard this trust as this plays a huge role in your onwards career journey.

8.Seek A Coach

An effective Coach will use the necessary tools and techniques to enable you to challenge the status quo, change behavioural and managerial styles that hinder your progress. He/ she will encourage you to reflect on those unwanted roadblocks, work with you to manage and overcome these persistently.

A Coach will help you close the gap between your inherent potential, your current competencies and your Future desired Self.
